Craft CMS vs Umbraco
We favor Craft CMS for a business website whose marketing team needs straightforward publishing and whose agency owns the custom implementation. Umbraco is a stronger contender when the organization already depends on .NET expertise. Its current AI tooling also deserves credit, even where Craft is our overall website recommendation.
Who Craft and Umbraco are each for
Choose Craft CMS when:
- Marketing needs reusable pages and connected content with clear brand guardrails.
- A Craft partner will own implementation, hosting, updates, and support.
- The website can use a focused CMS without a .NET dependency.
Choose Umbraco when:
- An established .NET team will build and maintain the website.
- Your existing Umbraco implementation and publishing workflow work well.
- Umbraco's available AI packages fit specific editorial or development tasks.

Craft CMS leads for this brief.
100 points allocated by business priority. Ties split the points.
We score websites built and supported by an agency, with editors working inside an approved design system. These are our recommendations for that brief, not product quality ratings.
How we scorePublishing and brand controlWinner: Craft CMS20-point priorityCraft is our preference for business editors who need fast, repeatable page building inside a defined design system.
We can give a Craft editor a library of approved sections, useful field instructions, previews, and permissions that match their role. Matrix supports that approach without handing over control of typography or layout rules. Umbraco also supports component editing. A February 2026 Umbraco implementer report describes customers resisting an editor change during an upgrade. One report is not a usability verdict, but it reinforces why continuity and real editor testing belong in this decision.
Content architectureWinner: Craft CMS15-point priorityWe prefer Craft's content modeling approach for connecting an organization's services, people, locations, and reusable page content.
For a healthcare network or manufacturer, the hard part is often managing relationships consistently across the website. Craft's entries and relations let us model those connections and expose only the fields each editor needs. Umbraco's document types can support sophisticated structures too. Our preference reflects the focused Craft implementation we would recommend for this audience, not a missing-feature claim about Umbraco. An established Umbraco model with reliable integrations may be more valuable than replacing it during a cosmetic redesign.
Custom implementationWinner: Umbraco15-point priorityUmbraco wins when the organization already has the .NET skills and application infrastructure to support it.
Umbraco's .NET foundation can align a website with the organization's existing developers, deployment practices, and integrations. That is a practical ownership advantage, particularly when an internal team will keep extending the application. Craft gives a PHP team a different, capable path. Choosing between them should account for who will troubleshoot an integration or review a security update two years after launch. Familiarity alone is not decisive, but a productive existing development team should not be treated as interchangeable.
Does Craft require leaving Microsoft infrastructure?
Not necessarily. Check the selected Craft version and hosting requirements against the proposed infrastructure. The application still needs PHP expertise.
Security and supportTie15-point priorityBoth can be professionally operated; the support agreement must cover the application as well as hosting.
Mostly Serious can manage Craft hosting, updates, maintenance, and support so the marketing team does not become the system administrator. Umbraco offers Cloud services and a partner ecosystem, but custom application responsibilities still need an owner. Compare backup restoration, deployment testing, access management, and response commitments in the proposed plans. Neither a hosted platform nor an agency relationship automatically satisfies every procurement requirement. We call this even because the delivered service and implementation determine the relevant outcome.
How often does Umbraco need upgrading?
Plan upgrades around the chosen release, its dependencies, and security updates. Long-term support releases have a three-year lifecycle; teams do not need to adopt every new major release.
Lifetime valueWinner: Craft CMS10-point priorityCraft is our lower-complexity recommendation for this website brief, especially when a specialist partner maintains the application.
A free CMS license says little about the lifetime cost of a custom website. Our Craft preference here assumes the business needs publishing, relationships, and integrations rather than a broader .NET application program. Craft 5 has active support through 2030 and security support through 2031, which helps plan maintenance. Umbraco's LTS policy also supports deliberate upgrade planning. Compare actual three-year proposals; an existing Umbraco team can make staying on Umbraco the more economical choice.
Ecosystem confidenceTie10-point priorityBoth remain active specialist platforms; existing partner quality and extension continuity are more useful than broad popularity claims.
We found concrete upgrade concerns from experienced Umbraco users, but not evidence that the platform is abandoned. Its release history shows continuing development. Craft's 2026 community survey reports engaged developer loyalty, with a self-selected sample that cannot represent every customer. For either platform, ask which extensions are essential, who supports them, and whether another qualified development partner could maintain the site. We do not turn isolated complaints into a universal decline score.
AI enablementWinner: Umbraco15-point priorityUmbraco currently offers a broader first-party AI foundation for governed editor assistance and connected development tools.
Umbraco's AI capability statement documents an in-product integration layer, prompt packages, agent experiences, and developer MCP tooling. That gives it an advantage over Craft's more plugin-led approach across editorial assistance, developer access, and operational integration. Availability still varies: Umbraco labels semantic search beta and automation alpha, so we do not count those as mature capabilities. Craft's MCP plugin is useful, but a connector alone does not match the breadth of Umbraco's installed, governed AI foundation.
Planning a migration
Inventory document types, properties, media, languages, members, forms, and integrations. Rebuild Razor templates and application code. Confirm the new solution preserves access controls and connected Microsoft services that the organization still needs.
Preserve useful URLs where possible. For changed paths, build and test a redirect map, transfer metadata, and monitor indexing and traffic after launch. Google's site-move guidance explains the process; search traffic can still fluctuate. Talk with us about planning a Craft project before committing.
