Craft CMS vs Wix
For a custom business website with complex content, integrations, and an ongoing development partner, we recommend Craft CMS over Wix. Wix can serve real businesses, but its convenience does not remove the tradeoffs of building inside a hosted platform. Its expanding developer and AI capabilities deserve credit without becoming a substitute for the right content architecture.
Who Craft and Wix are each for
Choose Craft CMS when:
- The website connects services, locations, people, or complex product information.
- Editors need approved components rather than unrestricted layout changes.
- You need control over application behavior and long-term support.
Choose Wix when:
- Wix’s business tools cover the full operating requirements.
- Your team already delivers effectively with Wix Studio.
- The project can stay within a tested platform architecture.

Craft CMS leads for this brief.
100 points allocated by business priority. Ties split the points.
We score websites built and supported by an agency, with editors working inside an approved design system. These are our recommendations for that brief, not product quality ratings.
How we scorePublishing and brand controlWinner: Craft CMS20-point priorityCraft lets us tailor publishing to the business while keeping design decisions in approved components.
Matrix fields give marketers reusable sections and predictable fields. Wix Studio supports roles and reusable design patterns, so it is not simply an uncontrolled canvas. Our preference is Craft’s deliberately scoped editorial interface for a substantial site, where editing a service page should not require understanding the site’s visual construction.
Content architectureWinner: Craft CMS15-point priorityCraft is a stronger fit for deeply connected content that must evolve with the organization.
Wix has CMS reference fields and dynamic pages. The advantage we see in Craft entries is direct control over relationships, queries, validation, and reuse across a custom application. Test a realistic directory or service-and-location structure before choosing a platform on the strength of a page-builder demonstration.
Can Wix represent many-to-many relationships?
Yes. Multi-reference fields connect multiple items between collections. Test the limits and editing workflow against your particular model.
Custom implementationWinner: Craft CMS15-point priorityCraft gives the implementation team control over the application and deployment environment.
Wix development tools support APIs, custom code, and headless work. That is substantial capability, but the site still operates within Wix’s platform model. Craft is our preference when server behavior, integrations, deployment, and future portability are central requirements. A custom build still needs documentation so it does not become dependent on one developer.
Security and supportTie15-point priorityWix manages its platform; a supported Craft site can also keep technical operations off the client’s desk.
Compare Wix’s security responsibilities with the proposed Craft hosting and support scope. Mostly Serious support can cover updates, staging, hosting, and application fixes. Neither arrangement removes responsibility for permissions, third-party integrations, privacy, and recovery. We do not award a security win from the platform’s popularity or license model.
Lifetime valueWinner: Craft CMS10-point priorityCraft is our preferred investment when it avoids workarounds and a premature rebuild.
Include development, subscriptions, business apps, support, integrations, and change requests over several years. Wix plans can be economical when they fit the brief. Once custom content and operating requirements drive the project, the relevant comparison is the supported system’s lifetime cost, not Wix’s entry subscription against a custom Craft build.
Ecosystem confidenceTie10-point priorityWix has scale and active investment; Craft has a focused specialist ecosystem.
An August 2026 Wix user discussion describes frustration with increasing interface complexity. That is a useful usability signal, not proof of market decline or business unsuitability. Wix’s developer platform remains active. Craft offers a smaller partner and plugin community. Assess continuity and fit rather than equating size with quality.
AI enablementWinner: Wix15-point priorityWix has a broader first-party AI connection to its business platform.
The official Wix MCP supports developer documentation, business APIs, and site operations. That extends beyond generating copy or a starter website. Craft has Craft CMS MCP, AI Assistant, and other operational plugins, but needs more specialist assembly. Wix wins integrated availability; private administrative access must still be scoped separately from public site information.
Planning a migration
Inventory collections, relationships, dynamic pages, media, forms, members, store data, and automations. Confirm available exports and API access for each data type. Rebuild templates and reconnect business services, testing member access and transactional behavior separately from content pages.
Preserve useful URLs where possible. For changed paths, build and test a redirect map, transfer metadata, and monitor indexing and traffic after launch. Google's site-move guidance explains the process; search traffic can still fluctuate. Talk with us about planning a Craft project before committing.
Can we move the Wix design directly into Craft?
Plan for a new template implementation. Content export and recreating the visual design are separate tasks, and connected Wix services may require replacement or integration.
