Mostly Serious is a digital services and AI enablement agency building thoughtful web and software. We're a team of dedicated, passionate, and fun people who share an interest in doing hard, challenging work while living fulfilling lives.
We're hiring a Developer to build the websites and applications at the center of our client work. You'll handle front-end and back-end development on a wide range of client projects, backed by our cross-functional team and AI systems.
The role is remote. After-hours work is rare, usually for a critical deployment and typically once a month or less. Occasional travel, one or two times per year, to Springfield, Missouri for team events is required.
What You'll Do
- Build and maintain client websites and applications, front-end and back-end.
- Work in our stack: Craft CMS, modern JS and Svelte, React and Next.js, TypeScript, and Tailwind, plus Railway, Vercel, Clerk, Convex, Supabase, Shopify, Sanity, and GitHub, among others.
- Write tested, maintainable code and take part in code review.
- Estimate your work accurately and deliver at or under budget.
- Work with the design team on implementation planning and flag constraints early.
- Lean on AI coding tools to move faster and increase the quality of your work, and help build the skills and agentic workflows the team relies on.
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of professional full-stack web development. We're open from developer to senior level.
- Solid front-end and back-end skills on real client projects.
- Experience building and customizing content management systems.
- Testing and version-control discipline.
- Already experimenting with AI coding tools like Codex, Claude Code, and Cursor, and eager to use, improve, and build skills and agentic workflows. This one isn't optional.
Nice to have: agency experience, Craft CMS, Svelte, Tailwind, CI/CD, e-commerce integrations, and DevOps experience.
Working With AI
We're an AI-first shop. You don't need to be an expert, but you do need to be on board with using AI to do the job. That means you're already experimenting with agentic coding tools and you're ready to build and improve the skills and workflows that make our work faster and better. If AI coding isn't something you're excited about, this isn't the right fit.
What Success Looks Like
- First 90 days: You know our stack well enough to build without hand-holding, you're shipping real client work, and AI is part of how you work.
- By 6 months: You're handling your own projects start to finish and using AI to move measurably faster with higher quality outcomes.
- By a year: You're a dependable end-to-end builder on our web and custom AI projects, your AI workflows have measurable ROI to the business, and you're growing toward more senior work.
Compensation & Location
This is a remote role with a competitive base, depending on experience and location, plus a bonus incentive program based on performance and impact. Occasional travel to Springfield, Missouri for team events is required, typically one or two times per year.
Benefits
- Company-paid employee health, dental, and vision premiums, with an HSA option.
- Simple IRA with company match up to 3%.
- Profit sharing after a year.
- Between 37 and 50 paid days off a year: tenure-based PTO that grows from 10 to 25 days, 11 paid holidays, and a paid winter break when the office closes the last couple weeks of December.
- 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave after a year.
- $500 work-from-home equipment stipend, plus a MacBook Pro.
Professional Development
We're a small, expert team dedicated to growing and learning together. The company stays on the frontier by continually reinventing how we work, which means our team members are continually learning, growing, and expanding their skills. Here's what that looks like:
- A clear path from Developer to Senior Developer, with the typical move happening within two to three years based on demonstrated skill, ownership, and impact.
- Annual compensation reviews, with pay that grows alongside your performance based on clear compensation bands. You're also eligible for performance bonuses tied to your impact and the company's results.
- AI training and token budgets. We believe generative AI is reshaping the nature of how work gets done, so you'll have a healthy $200/mo Claude Code or Codex plan and access to advanced educational resources.
- Real investment in your craft, including budget for conferences, courses, and certifications.
- Recognition for the long haul through our Anniversary Awards program, with perks at 3, 5, 7, and 10 years, including a $5,000 two-week paid vacation after 10 years.
